Depression must first be understood before it's treated. Depression is no laughing matter because about 15 million people in America suffer from it. The most troubling aspect is that only about 1/3 of those people seek help. Too many Americans are still tarnished by the age-old stereotype associated with any mental illness. They refuse to allow a label placed on them that might damage their good character. Depression has to be diagnosed before it can be treated. Diagnosis can't happen until the afflicted seek help. That's the terrible merry go round of depression.
Depression has many causes. Biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors can result in depression . Don't overlook the genetic link. Family history plays a major role in many diseases that are passed on down the line. It's not only genetics but how a family lives together. Living comes along with a lot of stress. Some undergo a daily fight just to make ends meet. For others the stress comes from making it in the world. Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair. It's a long list.
In the early stages depression is often hard to diagnose. Even while a loved one suffers from this disease the signs may be hard to notice. Everyone fights some mild distress once in awhile. It's not uncommon. The affects of depression go much deeper. It's already too late for early detection when the symptoms interfere with life. Loneliness and general disgust with life are common for depression sufferers. They no longer see a sign of hope in their lives. Sleep habits and enjoyment from life no longer exist. This is when treatment is critical.
In depression treating you have to reinstall hope and purpose into those that are suffering. This is typically achieved through 'talk therapy'. It's effective after months and sometimes years of treatment. Anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox can also help . Although they have some serious side effects, these medicines work. Studies also show that some herbs can be effective as depression treatment. Depression support groups also exist. Medical professionals should be consulted if you or someone you know shows symptoms of depression.
